August in Madrid is a tribute to those looking to enjoy a city at their feet. Its cultural program for the summer remains select, but you’ll find a lot fewer queues. Madrid rewards you for your visit with a forgotten photography icon. It’s Louise Dahl-Wolfe, the mythical photographer who helped Harper’s Bazaar become legend between 1936 and 1958 with pictures of Vivian Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, and Orson Welles. Her brilliant book inspired many new geniuses like Richard Avedon. August is a great month to enjoy a city like Madrid. Its cultural program doesn’t slow down, even though its streets look empty when many locals leave for the holidays. This season is the perfect moment to get lost in the many leisure options that Madrid has to offer outside your Flat Sweet Home. To begin this city tour, we recommend a walk through the clouds at the spectacular SkyNight restaurant (Avenida de América, 49)—designed by the architect Jean Nouvel—which hosts the 43 Live The Roof festival on August 7. Its futuristic rooftop will host an intimate concert by Anni B. Sweet; her angelic voice combines American folk with the sound of Spanish music.

The exhibition Terror at the laboratory (Terror en el laboratorio) at Fundación Telefónica (c / Fuencarral, 3) is one of the must-see events this summer in Madrid, and it’s at walking distance if you stay in our Flat Sweet Home Gran Vía. In this entertaining exhibition, you can celebrate the meeting between Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, and Mary Shelly, who established the trope of the creatures created by an ambitious scientist. It was the starting point for the characters of The Island of Dr. Moreau, Frankenstein and The Vampire. At the Telefónica headquarters, you’ll learn the ins and outs of this trope’s major adaptations to film and literature. Not far from there, you can walk around the Old Madrid and visit the Palacio Real (calle Bailen, s / n) to admire the 100 key artworks to know the Seicento, the Italian seventeenth century. Baroque paintings by Caravaggio, Ribera, Bernini and Gentileschi will amaze you before it’s time to return to your centric Flat Sweet Home San Miguel Market and plan a nightly tapas route near Plaza Mayor and La Latina.

Madrid stands out for having a spectacular theatrical agenda throughout the year, and August is not the exception. The Teatro Alfil (c / Pez, 10), located right in the trendy neighborhood of Malasaña, is preparing a hilarious, acid play called Chefs. The play shows the peculiar world of gastronomy with a comical (as much as critical) script. Also, a visit to the Caixa Fórum (Paseo Prado, 36) is essential. The show The Weight of a Gesture (El peso de un gesto) is waiting for you in this avant-garde exhibition center. This exhibition analyzes the importance of the concept of art through pieces created by Juliao Sarmiento, and based on the collective imagination built from films, literature and architecture. These are only some of the many options available to you in your Madrid adventure, that begins in your cozy Flat Sweet Home.

Madrid doesn’t stop in the summer. July is almost over, and your adventure in Madrid is waiting for you outside the door of your comfortable Flat Sweet Home. We know you’ll enjoy spending a night hanging out with movie stars under the starry Madrilian sky at Palacio Cibeles (Plaza Cibeles, 1). Under its crystal dome, the palace carries out the Sunset Cinema film festival with screenings of films that have left a mark, such as Reservoir Dogs, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Third Man, Apocalypse Now, or the latest Mad Max film. If you’re a film buff, you can’t miss this festival and its double sessions on Friday nights. It’s the perfect lead-up to a walk down nearby Puerta de Alcalá, la Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol or the charming streets of Malasaña and Chueca neighborhoods, only a few steps away from your Fuencanal Flat Sweet Home.

If you’re a photography enthusiast, you’re in luck! During your stay in Madrid, you can see and enjoy the work of one of the most renowned photographers of the 20th century, Vivian Maier. The artist from New York never had her work exhibited while she was still living; she spent her days dedicated to childcare and to photography. Her portraits move the viewer to the depths of the human being and compellingly show the secrets of childhood in a different era. You can witness her endless creativity at Fundación Canal (Mateo Inurria, 2).

Another must-stop during your visit to the city is Barrio de las Letras, where you can find our Flat Sweet Home Prado Apartment. The place that was once a home to many great writers and artists is now the Caixa Forum (Paseo del Prado, 36), an exhibition center that never fails to amaze with its select exhibitions. Its last proposal allows you to immerse yourself in the world of impressionism, a movement that went from being damned to giving rise to modern art. This path is illustrated in the Philips collections, one of the best in the world; it’s rarely exhibited away from its headquarters in Washington. This exhibition presents works that marked the evolution from romanticism to impressionism and abstract expressionism. Manet, Sisley, Van Gogh, Picasso, Modigliani, Pollock, and Rothko are waiting for you in this magic exhibition.

Afterward, the time comes to meet Rafael Amargo at La Latina theater (Plaza de la Cebada, 2), set in an unbeatable location to enjoy the night in Madrid. Rafael Amargo’s show, Tiempo Muerto, mixes flamenco and street dance in a show that’s left its mark on audiences from all over the world. Another way to get closer to Spanish musical culture is enjoying Club del Río, a folk band with a fascinating alternative concept of pop music. You have a date with new Spanish indie music on July, 30 at café La Palma (calle La Palma, 62).

To end your week in Madrid with a bang we suggest you visit La Casa Encendida (Ronda de Valencia, 2) and its series La Terraza Magnética, with trendsetting films and music. This week, you can choose between the futuristic concert of :zoviet*france and the film John Dies at the End by the venerated director Don Coscarelli, a horror film turned into a bitter reflection of today’s dehumanization. The leisure that’s waiting for you in Madrid this week will turn your Flat Sweet Home experience into a midsummer night’s dream.

It’s always a good time to walk around the halls of Reina Sofía Museum, home of some of the most original art of the 20th century. After observing the artistic glories of last century’s avant-garde, like the fabulous Gernika or Dali’s works, you’ll enjoy a unique retrospective on leisure and man with the film series “Cinema and the leisure class,” organized by the museum. Through films like Dino Risi’s “Sorpasso,” a legend of the Italian cinema of Cinecittà, Goddard’s “Acid Week-end,” or the iconic “The Swimmer” by Frank Perry, the Reina Sofía examines the relationship and the need for leisure, and whether its existence is a curse or a blessing.

Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photography is a sample of Zen philosophy and an anthem to the sea in the middle of Madrid. His seascape photos are an oasis of peace among the haste of a city as lively as this. The calm in the works of this great Japanese artist, on display at Fundación Mapfre, will refresh your senses. After such a raw experience, there’s nothing like walking down Paseo de Recoletos or exploring the charming streets that make up the colorful neighborhood of Chueca.

Near Fundación Mapfre is the Museum of Romanticism, a place where you can lose yourself in an era now long gone. The museum celebrates the festival Caprichos del romanticismo (Whims of Romanticism) in June. It lasts until July 21st, but such an authentic museum is still worth a visit even if you can’t make it to the festival. Outside its 19th-century walls, visitors can quickly discover the futuristic Baceló market nearby. Here, you can shop and dine in style, all in the same space.

On the same day, several musical alternatives will make the night unforgettable. There’s a spectacular music series held at Jardín Botánico Alfonso XIII, and this week it’ll get you closer to the fabulous voice of Melody Gardot and her modern, sophisticated jazz. Her beauty competes with the lavish staging of Tindersticks’ pop sound, a band with an impossibly good, consistent sound. Their live show at La Riviera is a good excuse to stroll around Madrid Río, with the gaze turned to the Manzanares river. The next day, the Jardín Botánico Alfonso XIII hosts another unforgettable moment in the middle of this magical forest. Seal’s sensual music at this unique landscape will be the highlight of your night. After the show, you can relax at your Flat Sweet Home and dream about the Madrid you just visited.

Nocturna 2016, the terror returns!

Until May 29 lovers of fantasy and horror cinema can enjoy Nocturna, international festival that gathers in Madrid the best national and international proposals of this kind of cinema.

In its fourth edition, Nocturna held a special tribute to a film that marked a before and an after in the horror film: “An American Werewolf in London”, film which in 1981 was able to even the Academy of Arts and cinematographic Sciences in Hollywood to create a new category to recognize the incredible work of makeup in the film.

This year we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the premiere of “An American Werewolf in London” and Nocturna will be attended by its director, John Landis who will receive the Masters of Fantasy Award .

Another giant of the genre, this time in the performance, was Vincent Price, the perfect villain in many films and one of the most recognizable faces of the horror film that delighted generations and generations of fans to the genre during his career. Films as well known as The wax museum crimes, The Fly, House of Haunted Hill,Pit and the Pendulum, The Crow The tomb of Ligeia, The Masque of the Red death, The last man on earth or the Abominable Dr. Phibes, are just some of the titles that this titan elevated to the category of works of art due to his charisma and interpretative skills.

In addition, the International Festival of fantastic cinema of Madrid has a programme full of premieres and parallel activities as chats with authors and actors and roundtables.

Kiko Veneno, “Doble Vivo” Concert

A little bit Andalusian and a little bit Catalonian, José María López Sanfeliu, alias Kiko Veneno, will review all his musical career on Friday 27 at the New Apollo Theatre, with his show Double Vivo. The concert serves to introduce the self-titled album, which includes live recordings of the shows “+Solo que la una” and his tour with the Cordes del Món Orchestra.

Composer of such famous songs as “Flying voy”, which immortalized Camaron de la Isla, his music has always delved into crossbreeding and lyrics tell stories that reach us all.
In the first part of the concert, as in the show “+Solo que la una” Kiko and his guitar will be alone with the audience, counting and singing as has been doing songs from the 77 until today. In the second part of the show everything will change and his band, Los Notas del Retumbe, will join him with a string quartet, led by Michael Thomas, director of orchestras such as the ‘Bética Filarmónica de Sevilla’ or the ‘Ciudad de Almería’ and collaborator in the field of pop with figures like Elvis Costello and Björk. One way to listen the songs with different sound and other arrangements.

San Isidro, the great festival of Madrid!

This weekend Madrid dress Gala to celebrate its patron saint festivities. Up to 16 Monday the city will be setting for concerts, theatre, children’s activities, shows and parades. The Plaza Mayor, the meadow of San Isidro, the Vistillas gardens and the Retiro Park are just some of the scenarios on which act to artists of all styles.

More than 50 concerts of established musicians such as Santiago Auserón, Nacho Vegas, Esperanza Argüelles, El Langui, Cora Novoa the Banda Sinfónica de Madrid will take place during the weekend. But that is not all, there will be bands, dances, puppet shows, Dj’s that will offer fun for all ages.

Firework displays over the Retiro Park lake, dancing to the beat of swing music, Latin American sounds, tangoes and tap dancing in the Plaza del Museo Reina Sofía as well as classical music at nightfall in the Temple of Debod and Plaza de Oriente all form part of a clearly multi-disciplinary artistic programme. No wonder that from 14 to 16 May, Plaza del Conde de Barajas will be filled with poetry. Throughout the entire San Isidro festival the traditional pottery fair, the Feria de la Cacharrería, will be held in Plaza de las Comendadoras.

Documenta Madrid, the best documentaries films

International Documentary Film Festival, DocumentaMadrid, convene again in the capital to the best of the genre in its thirteenth edition, to be held from April 27 to May 8 in Cineteca the only theater in the country dedicated to the programming “cinema of reality”.

DocumentaMadrid festival will show, in its Official Section, a selection of the best non-fiction film produced last year worldwide and not released in Spain, competing for clinching for the Best Documentary Award (short and feature films). As every year, the festival will maintain the section “Panorama of the Spanish documentary” focused in the films produced in our country during 2015. A production increasingly rich and varied both in its proposals as in the cinematographic style.

The documentary film is a reflection of social, cultural, economic, artistic, environmental or technological realities that exist in the world, which is why the festival organizers want to make this a space for reflection and encounter different cultures and societies the convulsive moment in which we live.

Holi Run returns to Madrid!

This Sunday April 10th, Holi Run, the most fun and least competitive race, returns to Madrid to dye color to all participants. The intention is to surpass the figures achieved last year when 55,000 runners participated between the two races in April and October.

The race consists of a route of 5 km suitable for all: families, groups of friends or even pets! The Holi Run can be performed running or walking, according to the preparation of each one. It is not a competitive race and the main goal is the fun of the participants.

The organizers of the event, which will rotate through several cities in Spain, say that this year have more colors and painting stations in previous years, therefore, more fun for the participants. At the end of the course attendees will enjoy a party with participation of DJ Ben Hassel.
